Ben Affleck is back behind the camera with a political thriller that drops just in time for the weekend. The Animals Netflix movie pairs Affleck the director with Affleck the leading man, and surrounds him with a heavyweight cast headlined by Kerry Washington and Gillian Anderson. If you are hunting for something tense to stream on Friday night, this is the film everyone will be talking about. Here is everything you need to know before you press play.
Animals Netflix movie release date and streaming details
The Animals Netflix movie lands on Friday, 9 October 2026, streaming globally on Netflix and arriving in select cinemas the same day. That makes it a perfect day-and-date release: subscribers can watch it from home without waiting, while those who prefer the big screen get a limited theatrical run. The film runs for roughly 1 hour and 48 minutes, so it is a tight, focused thriller rather than a bloated epic. Expect it to top Netflix’s trending charts within days of release, given the star power involved.
Cast of Animals
Ben Affleck stars as Mark Kimball, a Los Angeles mayoral candidate whose life unravels when his son is kidnapped. Kerry Washington plays his wife Abigail, giving the film its emotional core. Gillian Anderson takes on the role of Dayle, a mysterious fixer who specialises in kidnapping cases and who unsettles the couple at every turn. The supporting cast includes Steven Yeun as Mark’s campaign manager, plus Adriana Paz, Luis Gerardo Méndez, Ray Fisher, Christopher Woodley, Matt Gerald and Jacob Estrada. Netflix co-founder Matt Damon is among the producers, continuing a long creative partnership with Affleck.
Plot: what is Animals about?
Without spoiling anything, the official story is gripping in its simplicity. When their young son is kidnapped, an LA mayoral candidate and his wife are drawn into a web of deception. As they scramble to raise the ransom money, they are forced to make choices — and reveal secrets — that could tear their world apart. The film reportedly explores the “masks” powerful people wear in public life, and how quickly fear can strip those masks away. Alongside the kidnapping crisis, Animals digs into the Kimball marriage itself: what it means to commit to another person, and the bargains that come with that commitment.
Behind the scenes of Ben Affleck’s thriller
Animals marks Affleck’s return to the director’s chair after Air (2023), and he also co-wrote the screenplay with Connor O. McIntyre and Billy Ray. In interviews, Affleck has said he aimed to peel back the social masks powerful people wear, building the story around characters pushed into extreme moral dilemmas. Production had an unusual journey: Affleck reportedly paused the shoot early on because he spotted thematic similarities with Spike Lee’s crime thriller Highest 2 Lowest, choosing to rework the story rather than release something that felt too familiar. The film also attracted headlines for its use of AI-assisted production tools — Netflix has been opening up AI technology to its filmmakers, and Affleck confirmed the movie used AI “for lots of things” behind the scenes, while keeping a very human cast front and centre.
Why Animals is worth watching this weekend
Political thrillers live or die on tension and performance, and Animals looks loaded on both counts. Washington brings her Scandal-honed crisis-management energy, Anderson’s fixer character promises to steal every scene, and Affleck has a strong track record as a thriller director with films like Argo and The Town. The kidnapping premise is lean and high-stakes, and the marriage drama layered on top gives it something most genre films lack: a real emotional wound.
